Hacienda San Juan
The project of Hacienda San Juan was born out of the dream of a banker, Francisco Freire and his wife, to produce an exceptional wine in their estate on the coast of Chile. In what used to be a colonial hacienda, hence the name the winery, the Freires hired the services of a renowned French oenologist Emeric Geneviere to advise them on how to build a winery from the ground up based on natural and biodynamic foundations. The privileged location of the vineyards just 5 kms away from the coast and granitic, calcareous soil that favor the slow maturity of grapes. Thus was Hacienda San Juan born and the founders decided to focus on just 3 varietals: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah. The first two were no brainers given the characteristics of the terroir. The latter was a gamble since they were not sure the climate would allow for this mediterranean varietal to reach its potential in this colder climate. The gamble paid off the the three varietals are really elegant, clean, coastal wines that truly reflect the terroir of this coastal corner of Chile.
